- <p> DIED. JOHN SHAD, 71, former Securities and Exchange Commission
- chairman; after heart surgery; in New York City. As head of
- SEC, Shad ordered the 1986 probe of Drexel Burnham Lambert that
- helped kick off the Wall Street scandals of the '80s and ultimately
- resulted in the firm's pleading guilty to securities fraud.
- Shad was later hired by Drexel to clean house, but quickly left
- as the firm staggered to its demise.
